" Backs Public Safety as Reason for Ongoing Demolition Exercise"
The Member representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency-01 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, popularly known as Omoj’omolo, has commended the Lagos State Government for its proactive stance on the ongoing demolition of certain buildings across parts of the state, describing the exercise as a necessary step to safeguard lives and property.
Hon. Ogundipe, who also praised the Governor for signing the 2026 Budget into law, emphasized that public safety remains the overriding consideration behind the demolition exercise. He noted that the government’s action reflects a commitment to preventing avoidable disasters and ensuring sustainable urban development.
Speaking of the exercise, the Governor explained that the affected structures were cleared to avert potential future tragedies, noting that many of the buildings posed serious environmental, structural, and safety risks to residents and the general public.
According to the Governor, the state cannot afford to wait until disaster strikes before taking decisive action. He stressed that although such measures may be difficult, they are essential to preventing loss of lives and large-scale destruction.
To cushion the impact of the exercise, the Governor assured affected citizens that the state government is prepared to provide additional support and assistance where necessary. He further directed all relevant agencies and stakeholders to act with compassion while ensuring strict compliance with existing laws.
“We cannot operate as a lawless society,” the Governor stated, adding that adherence to regulations and urban planning laws is critical to guaranteeing collective safety and sustainable development.
In line with this directive, Local Government authorities have been instructed to work closely with affected residents, offering necessary assistance and facilitating access to relief and support measures put in place by the state government.
Reacting to the development, Hon. (Otunba) Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode described the government’s position as responsible and forward-looking. He acknowledged that while the demolition exercise may be painful for those affected, it is a necessary step to protect the larger society and uphold the rule of law.
Hon. Ogundipe called on residents to remain calm and cooperate with government officials, assuring them that their concerns would not be ignored. He also urged citizens to always comply with building regulations and planning approvals to prevent future occurrences, stressing that collective responsibility is key to avoiding disasters and promoting orderly development.
The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to balancing enforcement with empathy, ensuring that while laws are upheld, affected citizens are not left without support during the transition.
