Oshodi-Isolo LG Chairman, Oloyede Wades into residents /waste collectors faceoff, gives 72 hours to revert to old rate
The Executive chairman of Oshodi-Isolo local government, Otunba Kehinde Almaroof Oloyede for the umpteenth time has waded intO the lingering waste rate disputes between Excellens Links and Tunaps over increase in the waste collection fee within the council.
The hike, according to the residents who are demanding a reversal, is a 300 percent increment from the initial fee.
There had been meetings midwived by the council chairman, Otunba Oloyede, between the waste collectors and residents to persuade the two waste collectors to revert to the old rate but they were unyielding after several meetings.
After failing all mediated steps to revert the rate, Excellence Links was given a month suspension from collecting and or packing wastes within the council areas until the dispute is settled.
In his further intervention when the suspension notice was served by the state government to Excellence Links, the council chairman summoned a stakeholders' meeting on Monday, 4 March, 2024 to amicably resolved the situation.
After several attempts to convince the collectors to revert the rate, they remained adamant, but the council chairman gave them an ultimatum of 72 hours to get back to him in writing, the acceptance of the status quo or allow new operators who are willing to collect N500 per room per month to take over the collection of wastes in the council.
The council chairman who fumed at the non responsive nature of the two waste collectors, gave them 72 hours to either choose the option of accepting the 500 per room rate or be out of business in Oshodi.
Otunba Oloyede who later addressed the teeming protesters who had flocked the council secretariat demanding termination of Excellence Links and Tunaps in waste collection from the council assured them that his government is solidly behind the residents in their demand for a fair rate charge.
The council chairman appealed to the residents to remain calm and await the 72 hours grace given to the waste collectors for further action.
He said; "I am going to write my report to governor, house of assembly and LAWMA that the meeting remains stalemate, since you are not responsive. If you want to remain in business, you need to sacrifice for the residents, if you won't yield, we will want others to do it first.
You refuse to listen to the cries of our people, this is unfair, you need to be on the side of the people. I have begged on your behalf several times buy you are adamant, we will always be on the part of our people on this case.
I want us to maintain the status quo on decentralising the waste collections in Oshodi. You have enjoyed monopoly for years, for once the people are asking you to shift ground on your rate, you don't want to listen to them.
I am given you the next 72 hours to get back to us in writing your agreement to revert to the N500 per room rate to enable me write to the governor, assembly and LAWMA on this issue."
